New Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion Equipped for Ministry through Training Seminar
A two-day training seminar for new Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion (EMHCs) was successfully conducted on 20th and 21st June 2026 at the Diocesan Pastoral Centre, Shirwad, Karwar. The programme was organised by the Diocesan Liturgical Commission under the leadership of Rev. Fr. Cyprian Silva, Director of the Commission.
A total of 36 participants from various parishes of the Diocese attended the seminar. The programme aimed at deepening their understanding of the ministry of Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion and strengthening their spiritual, liturgical, and pastoral commitment to the Church.
The participants were enriched through a series of sessions on important topics such as Canon Law concerning Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion, Church documents related to the ministry, the Theology of the Eucharist, the Prayer of the Church in the life of an EMHC, the transforming power of the Word of God, and the expectations of the Church and Parish Priest from those entrusted with this ministry. The sessions helped the participants appreciate both the dignity and responsibility associated with their service.
As part of their spiritual formation, the participants were also provided an opportunity to celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation, enabling them to renew their relationship with Christ and prepare themselves more worthily for their ministry.
On the second day, the Holy Eucharist was celebrated by Rt. Rev. Dr. Duming Dias, Bishop of Karwar. In his homily, the Bishop reflected on the Eucharist as the sacrament of sacrifice, forgiveness, and unity. He encouraged the newly trained EMHCs to cultivate the mind and heart of Christ, remain faithful to their calling, and carry out their ministry in close collaboration with their parish priests and in accordance with the directives of the diocese.
The seminar concluded with a vote of thanks by Rev. Fr. Cyprian Silva, who expressed his gratitude to Bishop Duming Dias for his constant support, encouragement, and guidance. He also thanked the resource persons and all those who contributed to the success of the programme, including Msgr. Simon Tellis; Rev. Frs. Intru Pinto, Baptist, Gabriel Monis, Sachin, Valento, Thomas Fernandes, and Ravi Horta. Special appreciation was extended to the staff of the Diocesan Pastoral Centre, particularly Steffi and the domestic staff, for their dedicated service and hospitality.
The training seminar proved to be a fruitful and enriching experience, equipping the new Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion with greater knowledge, spiritual depth, and renewed zeal to serve Christ and His Church through this important ministry.
