Renovated Sanctuary, Bell and Altar Inaugurated at Suvartha Matha Chapel, Banavasi
Suvartha Matha Chapel, Banavasi, witnessed a solemn and joyful celebration on 12 October 2026, as Rt. Rev. Dr. Duming Dias, Bishop of Karwar, inaugurated and blessed its renovated sanctuary and bell, and dedicated the new altar.
The inaugural began with a warm welcome to the Bishop by Rev. Fr. Stany Crasta, Parish Priest. Bishop Duming Dias then blessed the renovated sanctuary and bell and dedicated the altar, invoking God’s grace upon the chapel and its faithful community.
In his homily, the Bishop reflected on the life and virtues of the Blessed Virgin Mary, particularly her poverty, humility and complete surrender to God’s will. Noting that the Diocese has dedicated the year to the poor, he highlighted five dimensions of Mary’s approach to those in need: simplicity of life, compassion, humility, readiness to serve and trust in God’s providence. He urged the faithful to imitate her example by embracing simplicity, practising humility and showing compassion and solidarity towards the poor.
Drawing on Christ’s words, “Whatever you did for one of the least of my brethren, you did for me,” Bishop Duming Dias outlined seven practical ways Christians can support the poor. These include sharing food and essential necessities, providing financial assistance responsibly, supporting education and healthcare, visiting and comforting the sick and elderly, creating employment opportunities, defending the dignity and rights of vulnerable people, and serving everyone with love, respect and without discrimination. He reminded the congregation that authentic Christian discipleship is demonstrated through concrete acts of mercy and service.
Following the Eucharistic celebration, the bishop was felicitated as a gesture of respect and gratitude. Individuals who had contributed generously to the renovation project, as well as those who supported its completion, were also honoured for their dedication, generosity and service to the chapel community.
Several priests and religious participated in the celebration, joining the faithful in prayer and thanksgiving. Their presence added solemnity to the occasion and strengthened the spirit of communion among all those gathered.
The celebration concluded with a fellowship meal for the participants. The occasion reflected the community’s faith, generosity and shared commitment to enhancing the sacred space for worship and prayer. It also renewed the faithful’s resolve to serve the poor in accordance with the spirit of the Gospel.
