The Diocese of Karwar is conducting the Barefoot Counselling Training Programme – Phase II from 23rd to 25th July 2026 at the Apostles of the Holy Family, Makheri, Karwar. The three-day training programme has brought together 21 teachers from various schools of the diocese to equip them with basic counselling skills that will enable them to accompany students with empathy, understanding, and emotional maturity.

The programme commenced with a prayer service led by the participating teachers, seeking God’s guidance and blessings upon the training.

Mrs. Christina Rosario of St. Antony’s School, Sirsi, welcomed the gathering and highlighted the importance of counselling in today’s educational environment, where teachers play a vital role in nurturing the emotional and psychological well-being of students.

The programme was inaugurated by Most Rev. Dr. Duming Dias, Bishop of Karwar, who delivered the presidential address. In his inaugural message, the bishop emphasised the need for teachers to become compassionate listeners and supportive mentors, helping students face the challenges of modern life with confidence and hope.

The resource person, Fr. Joyson Sujay Vas, SJ, is leading the training through a series of interactive sessions focusing on the fundamentals of counselling. The programme includes practical exercises, group discussions, role plays, and case studies, enabling participants to develop essential skills such as active listening, empathy, effective communication, emotional awareness, and ethical responsibility in counselling.

The inaugural programme was compered by Mr. Nelson Gonsalvis of Holy Rosary High School, Yellapur, while the vote of thanks was proposed by Mr. Leelesh Britto of Mother Teresa School, Yellapur.

The training programme will continue until 25th July 2026, offering participants valuable opportunities to deepen their understanding of counselling and strengthen their ability to provide compassionate care and guidance to students in their respective schools.
