Faith Formation Commission Conducts Training Program for Catechism Teachers
The Commission for Faith Formation of the Diocese of Karwar organized a Catechism Teachers’ Training Program at Pratibhodaya, Honnavar, on June 14, 2026, under the leadership of Rev. Fr. Cyprian Silva. The program brought together 103 catechism teachers from Kumta, Honnavar, and Bhatkal deaneries, providing them with spiritual enrichment and practical training for their ministry.
The day began with an opening prayer invoking God’s blessings upon the participants and the various sessions planned for the day. In the first session, Rev. Fr. Cyprian Silva addressed the participants on the theme “Becoming an Effective Catechism Teacher.” He highlighted the essential Christian virtues required of catechists, including faith, commitment, love, patience, prayerfulness, and dedication. He encouraged the teachers to become authentic witnesses of Christ through both their teaching and personal example.
The second session was conducted by Rev. Fr. Benson Fernandes, Asst.Parish Priest of Our Lady of Remedies Church, Gundibala. Through a Demo Catechism Class, he demonstrated innovative teaching methods and creative approaches to make faith formation engaging and meaningful for children. The practical and interactive nature of the session was highly appreciated by the participants.
Later, Rev. Fr. Benjamin D’Souza delivered an inspiring talk on the role of faith in family life and daily living. He emphasized the importance of nurturing faith within families and explained how a vibrant faith life positively influences relationships, values, and everyday decisions.
The Holy Eucharist was the spiritual highlight of the program. In his homily, Rev. Fr. Cyprian Silva reflected on the mission and responsibility of catechism teachers. Drawing inspiration from Jesus, he called upon them to be loving and compassionate educators and reminded them of the Gospel mandate: “Freely you have received; freely give.” He encouraged them to generously share the gift of faith entrusted to them.
At the conclusion of the program, Rev. Fr. Cyprian Silva expressed his sincere gratitude to the Bishop for his constant support and guidance. He also thanked the parish priests for sending their catechism teachers and appreciated the active participation, generosity, and enthusiasm of all the attendees.
The training program concluded with lunch. The participants expressed their joy and appreciation for the enriching experience, stating that the seminar had strengthened their faith and equipped them with valuable skills for their important ministry of catechesis.
