Inauguration and Blessing of St. Joseph’s PU College, Karwar
The newly constructed St. Joseph’s PU College, Karwar, was inaugurated and blessed on March 19, 2025, coinciding with the solemnity of St. Joseph, the patron saint of the institution and the Diocese of Karwar. This landmark occasion marks a significant step in advancing quality education in the region.
The foundation stone for this ambitious project was laid on May 1, 2022, by Msgr. Simon Tellis, then Delegate of the Apostolic Administrator. The solemn dedication of the new facility was led by Rt. Rev. Dr. Duming Dias, Bishop of Karwar, while the inauguration was honored by Rt. Rev. Dr. Derek Fernandes, Bishop of Belgaum.
A key highlight of the new campus is the Bishop William D’Mello Memorial Block, a fitting tribute to the first Bishop of Karwar, whose steadfast leadership and dedication to Christ’s mission greatly influenced the growth of the diocese. This new structure stands as an enduring symbol of service and love, inspiring the community towards generosity and selflessness.
Fr. Stany Pinto, the principal of St. Joseph’s PU College, along with his dedicated staff and students, played a crucial role in the successful organization of the event. Addressing the gathering, Bishop Derek Fernandes emphasized the pivotal role of education in shaping individuals and society. He underscored the importance of silence and attentive listening in the learning process and encouraged students to honor their parents’ sacrifices. His words, “Learn, earn, and burn your own money,” left a lasting impression on all present.
Bishop Duming Dias expressed profound gratitude to his predecessors, acknowledging their vision and commitment in shaping the mission and values of the diocese. Mr. George Fernandes, President of the Catholic Association, also addressed the gathering, highlighting the growing need for a full-fledged degree college within the diocese to further enhance educational opportunities.
The construction of the new college building was expertly managed by JM Constructions, under the leadership of Minin Pudthado, ensuring the highest standards of quality and excellence in architectural design and structural engineering.
The event was graced by the presence of priests, religious sisters, civic leaders, education officials, parents, students, and well-wishers. Among the distinguished guests was Mr. Ganapathi Ulvekar, MLC, who extended his support and best wishes for the institution’s future.
Fr. Valerian Sequeira, Secretary of KDES, extended heartfelt thanks to all who contributed to making this vision a reality, recognizing the collective effort that brought this remarkable project to fruition.
With this new milestone, St. Joseph’s PU College is poised to become a beacon of academic excellence, nurturing young minds and shaping future leaders.
