KDDC Launches Self-Help Group Initiative in Uttara Kannada District

Karwar Diocesan Development Council (KDDC) is proud to announce the successful formation of Self-Help Groups (SHGs) across several parishes in the Uttara Kannada district. This grassroots initiative is designed to empower local communities—especially women—by fostering financial independence, social solidarity, and sustainable development.

So far, a total of 13 Self Help Groups (SHGs) have been established under this program across five parishes. Divalli, Manchikeri, and Kirwatti parishes have each formed three groups, while Hunchettikoppa and Kodse parishes have formed two groups each. Every group unites members who are dedicated to mutual support, financial growth, and collective community development.

The self-help groups under KDDC’s guidance are rooted in five core objectives. They seek to promote economic empowerment by encouraging savings, access to microcredit, and income-generating activities that enhance financial stability. At the same time, they foster social solidarity, strengthening community trust, cooperation, and shared responsibility. The groups also emphasize skill development through training in entrepreneurship, leadership, and financial literacy.

A key focus is women’s empowerment, creating safe platforms for women to voice their concerns, take part in leadership, and play active roles in community building. Finally, the SHGs encourage sustainable livelihoods by promoting eco-friendly practices and ventures that support both the community and the environment.

This initiative represents a significant step toward inclusive development and community-led transformation. KDDC remains committed to expanding this program to more parishes in the coming months, ensuring that the benefits of self-reliance and collective action reach many more families across the district.
