Political Awareness Program held at KDDC, Karwar
A political awareness program for the deaneries of Kajubag, Kone, Kumta, Honnavar, and Bhatkal was organized on 28 February 2026 at the KDDC Building, Karwar. The program was jointly conducted by KDDC in collaboration with the Laity Commission, Youth Commission, Women’s Commission, Social Communication Commission, and the Ecumenism Commission of the Diocese of Karwar. A total of 54 participants were present for the program.
The program commenced with the lighting of the ceremonial lamp by the dignitaries, symbolizing enlightenment and guidance. Fr. Edwin D’Souza, Director of the Ecumenism Commission, led the gathering in prayer. Fr. Silvan Rodrigues, Director of the Youth Commission, extended a warm welcome to all the participants. Fr. Gabriel Lopes, Secretary of KDES, delivered the introductory address, stressing the importance of unity and cautioning against divisions within the community. He urged everyone to work together in harmony for the common good.
Fr. Steven D’Souza, Director of KDDC, introduced the speaker and later proposed the vote of thanks. Fr. Lancy Rodrigues, director of the Laity Commission and chief guest, in his address encouraged the participants to be the “salt of the earth” and to remain vigilant and aware in fulfilling their responsibilities.
Mrs. Veronica Carnelio, the resource person of the day, delivered an insightful session on the Panchayat Raj system and the importance of responsible and value-based leadership both in society and in the Church. She encouraged the contesting candidates not to hesitate to stand for elections repeatedly, emphasizing that active participation in politics enables individuals to serve and uplift the community effectively.
She also introduced the “One Page, One Family” concept, motivating candidates to personally reach out to each family with a clear outline of their vision and priorities. Furthermore, she highlighted the need to maintain good relationships with people of other religions, promoting harmony, dialogue, and mutual respect in society.
Among those present were Fr. Ireneo Dias, Dean of Kajubag, and Fr. Stewart Fernandes, Director of Social Communication. The program concluded with an engaging interactive session during which the speaker clarified the doubts of the participants. The gathering ended with a renewed sense of commitment and responsibility among the deanery representatives.
