New Year Get-Together of Migrants held at Chendia, Karwar

The Commission for Migrants of the Catholic Diocese of Karwar joyfully organized the New Year Get-Together of Migrants on 11 January 2026 at Chendia. Migrants from various parts of India participated in the program, reflecting the rich cultural diversity and unity of the migrant community.

The program began with the celebration of the Holy Eucharist, during which God’s blessings were invoked upon all migrants and their families as they begin the New Year 2026 with hope and faith.

Following the Eucharist, Sr. Mabel D’Cruz delivered an enlightening and meaningful talk on the Protection of Migrants. She highlighted the rights and challenges faced by migrants and emphasized the Church’s responsibility to stand in solidarity with them, offering care, protection, and support.

The event was graced by the presence of the Migrant Commission Coordinators, Mrs. Catherine Dias and Mr. Franko Fernandes, PPC Secretary, and Fr. Antony Rodrigues, Diocesan Secretary of the Migrant Commission. Their presence and words of encouragement strengthened the spirit of unity and belonging among the migrant community.

The program concluded with a time of fellowship, as participants shared breakfast and tea, fostering bonds of friendship and togetherness. The New Year Get-Together was a meaningful occasion of prayer, awareness, and communion, marking a hopeful and grace-filled beginning to the year 2026 for the migrant community of the Diocese of Karwar.

Diocese of Karwar Rejoices in the Ordination of Five New Priests

The Diocese of Karwar joyfully celebrated the ordination of five new priests during a solemn Eucharistic celebration held at Our Lady of Assumption Cathedral, Kajubhag, Karwar. The sacred rite of ordination was presided over by Rt. Rev. Dr. Duming Dias, Bishop of Karwar.

The newly ordained priests are Fr. Ceephus Rodrigues, Fr. Claudius Raja Doss, Fr. Rohan Fernandes, Fr. Sandeep Gomes, and Fr. Simon Siddi, who were ordained to the holy order of priesthood to serve the Church and the people of God. A large number of priests, religious brothers and sisters, seminarians, and faithful from various parishes of the diocese participated in the joyous celebration.

In his homily, Bishop Duming Dias reflected on Jesus Christ as the Good Shepherd, highlighting the essential qualities of a shepherd that every priest must embody—self-giving love, humility, compassion, faithfulness, and a deep sense of responsibility towards God’s people. He exhorted the newly ordained priests to live their priesthood as true shepherds after the heart of Christ. The Bishop also expressed his sincere gratitude to the parents and families of the newly ordained priests for their sacrifices, prayers, and support in nurturing these vocations.

After the Holy Mass, a brief felicitation program was organized to honor the newly ordained priests. On behalf of the Cathedral Parish, Fr. Thomas Fernandes, Rector of Our Lady of Assumption Cathedral, proposed the vote of thanks, acknowledging all those who contributed to the smooth conduct of the celebration. Fr. Gabriel Monis served as the master of ceremony, and candidates were trained and guided for the ordination by Fr. Sachin D’Souza.

The celebration concluded with a fellowship meal, which was served to all those present, marking the joyful occasion of thanksgiving and unity.

The Jubilee Year was solemnly concluded at the diocesan level on 28 December 2025 at the Our Lady of Assumption Cathedral, Kajubhag, Karwar, with a meaningful Eucharistic celebration presided over by Rt. Rev. Dr. Duming Dias, Bishop of Karwar.

In his homily, the Bishop reflected on the theme “Hope does not disappoint”, reminding the faithful that Christian hope, rooted in Christ, sustains believers even amid trials and uncertainties. He exhorted the people to remain steadfast in faith and to carry the spirit of the Jubilee Year into their daily lives through prayer, charity, and trust in God.

Highlighting the significance of the Holy Family, the Bishop called upon families to take inspiration from Jesus, Mary, and Joseph, encouraging them to become domestic churches marked by love, unity, forgiveness, and faith. He emphasized that strong and faith-filled families are the foundation of a vibrant Church and society.

As part of the concluding rite, the Bishop venerated the Cross, signifying gratitude for the graces received during the Jubilee Year and a renewed commitment to live as witnesses of hope in the world.

The celebration was attended by priests including Fr. Thomas Fernandes, Fr. Cyprian Silva, and Fr. Wilson D’Souza, along with religious sisters and a large number of lay faithful. The solemn and prayerful atmosphere marked a fitting conclusion to the Jubilee Year at the diocesan level.

The faithful departed with hearts filled with gratitude, renewed hope, and a deeper resolve to live out the Gospel values in their families and communities.

St. Joseph’s P.U. College Karwar celebrated its Annual Day on Saturday, 20 December 2025, in a joyful and vibrant atmosphere. The program was graced by Mr. Sajid Ahmed Mulla, KAS, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Uttara Kannada District, and Mr. Dolrich Fernandes, entrepreneur and owner of Milan Hospitality, Karwar, as the chief guests. The event was presided over by Rev. Fr. Gabriel Lopes, Secretary, KDES, Karwar.

The program commenced with a graceful prayer dance, setting a spiritual tone for the celebration. Rev. Dr. Stany Pinto, Principal of the college, presented the Annual College Report, highlighting the commendable achievements of the students in academics, cultural activities, and co-curricular pursuits.

The students showcased a variety of entertaining and meaningful cultural programs focusing on themes such as women’s empowerment, child upbringing, and other social concerns, which were well appreciated by the audience. Prizes were distributed to the winners of various sports, cultural, and academic competitions held throughout the academic year.

In his address, the chief guest motivated the students to face life’s challenges with confidence and strive for higher goals. In his presidential address, Rev. Fr. Gabriel Lopes emphasized the importance of values, urging the students to guard their minds against negativity, leave behind kindness that people will never forget, and lead with humility by empowering others to shine.

The program concluded on a joyful and reflective note, bringing back fond memories and inspiring everyone present to uphold the values highlighted during the celebration.

Diocesan-Level Carol Singing Competition held at Honavar

The Laity Commission of the Diocese of Karwar, through its active wing, the Catholic Association of the Diocese of Karwar (CADK), successfully organized the Diocesan-Level Carol Singing Competition on Saturday, 20th December, 2025, at Pratibhodaya, Honavar.

Teams that secured prizes at the deanery-level competitions were eligible to participate at the diocesan level. Accordingly, eight teams qualified and competed in the finals held at Honavar, presenting melodious and spiritually enriching Christmas carols.

The program began with a message by Mr. Manjunath Naik, a Congress leader, who highlighted the significance of the month of December as a time of love, warmth, and remembrance centered on Christmas. He joyfully shared that his daughter was born on Christmas Day, adding a personal touch to his message.

Renowned senior journalist Mr. G. U. Bhat of Honavar delivered a meaningful Christmas message, praising the commendable contributions of the Christian community, especially in the fields of education, social service, and sponsorship programs. He particularly appreciated the selfless service of priests and religious sisters, notably Sr. Maria Goretti, and remarked that “Christians are for others.”

Rev. Fr. Richard Rodrigues emphasized in his address that carol singing is a powerful platform to bring out the talents of the youth and reminded the gathering that the youth are the true wealth of the nation. Rev. Fr. Benjamin D’Souza, Dean of Honavar Deanery and one of the judges, shared his observations on group singing and highlighted the dedication and discipline required to build a quality choir. The Spiritual Director of CADK, Rev. Fr. Lancy Rodrigues, underlined that the true celebration of Christmas lies in experiencing and living the presence of Christ in our midst.

Also present on the dais were CADK President Mr. George Fernandes, Vice-President Mr. Stephen Rodrigues, General Secretary Mr. Clement Gudinho, and Honavar Deanery Coordinator Mr. Henry Lima. The program was compered by Mr. Jacob Fernandes. Several dignitaries were felicitated with shawls and mementos. The competition was judged by Rev. Fr. Benjamin D’Souza, Rev. Fr. Sachin D’Souza, and Rev. Fr. Cyprian D’Silva.

The results of the competition were as follows: First Prize: Infant Jesus Church, Agasebagil; Second Prize: St. Joseph’s Church, Lower Kasarkod; Third Prize: Our Lady of Miracles Church, Haliyal. The event concluded on a joyful note, fostering the true spirit of Christmas through music, fellowship, and faith.

Government Officials’ Christmas Get-Together Celebrated at KDDC, Karwar

The Diocese of Karwar organized a meaningful Government Officials’ Christmas Get-Together Celebration at KDDC, Karwar, on 23rd December 2025. The program brought together officials, clergy, religious, and invited guests in a spirit of harmony, fellowship, and Christmas joy.

The program was compered by Rev. Fr. Steevan D’Souza and commenced with a warm welcome address by Rev. Fr. Gabriel Lopes, followed by the felicitation of dignitaries with flowers. The celebration was formally inaugurated with the lighting of the lamp, invoking God’s blessings upon all present.

The gathering was honored by the presence of Most Rev. Dr. Duming Dias, Bishop of Karwar; Dy. SP S. V. Girish; Mr. Prajith; Mr. George Fernandes; and Rev. Fr. Richard Rodrigues, Vicar General. Many priests and religious sisters from different parts of the Diocese were also present, adding to the spirit of unity and communion.

A joyful cake-cutting ceremony marked the festive celebration. The program was enriched by Christmas carol singing by the Kajubagh youth, whose melodious presentation beautifully conveyed the message of peace, hope, and joy of the Nativity.

In his address, Dy. SP S. V. Girish emphasized the importance of service with the right motive, stating that Christ is peace in a world disturbed by conflict. Sharing from his personal experience, he mentioned that members of his family studied in Christian institutions, where they imbibed strong moral values. He observed that while peace is lacking in the world today, the teachings of Jesus offer true peace, and he extended his Christmas wishes to all.

Addressing the gathering, Most Rev. Dr. Duming Dias, Bishop of Karwar, conveyed his Christmas greetings and called upon everyone to come together in unity. He expressed gratitude to all officials for their dedicated service to society and reminded the gathering that Jesus came into the world to bring peace, especially to the downtrodden and marginalized. Highlighting the importance of the manger, the Bishop underlined the values of humility and simplicity. He further stressed that the Church stands for inclusion, love, and harmony, affirming that everyone is included and loved, and that religion calls us to love all without discrimination.

The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by Rev. Fr. Richard Rodrigues, Vicar General. The celebration ended with a fellowship meal, providing an opportunity for interaction and strengthening bonds of fraternity. The event stood as a powerful witness to the Christmas message of peace, service, unity, and inclusive love.

Diocese of Karwar hosts CRI Christmas Get-Together

The CRI Christmas Get-Together was joyfully celebrated on 21st December 2025 at the Bishop’s House, Shirwad, Karwar, which graciously hosted the program. The gathering brought together 65 members of the Conference of Religious of India (CRI) in a spirit of fellowship, prayer, and joyful preparation for the feast of Christmas.

The program commenced with a warm welcome by Rev. Fr. Silvan Rodrigues, Secretary for Clergy and Religious, who emphasized the importance of unity and collaboration among religious as they prepare to celebrate the birth of Christ. The input session was conducted by Rev. Fr. Paul Melwyn D’Souza, who offered insightful reflections on the Apostolic Exhortation Dilexit Te of Pope Leo XIV, encouraging the participants to renew their apostolic zeal and commitment to religious life.

As part of spiritual preparation for Christmas, time was set aside for the Sacrament of Reconciliation, followed by the Holy Eucharist, solemnly celebrated by Most Rev. Dr. Duming Dias, Bishop of Karwar. The Bishop’s presence and pastoral leadership added deep spiritual significance to the celebration.

The festive spirit continued with Christmas carols rendered by the CRI members, creating a joyful and prayerful atmosphere. Bro. Bonaventure animated the gathering through engaging spot games, fostering solidarity and joy among the participants. As a gesture of love and appreciation, the Bishop distributed Christmas gifts to the Superiors of the Congregations.

Before the fellowship meal, Rev. Fr. Richard Rodrigues led the grace before meals. The program concluded with a heartfelt vote of thanks by Sr. Alphonsa, President of CRI, who expressed gratitude to the host, the Bishop’s House, and all those who contributed to the success of the event, especially Rev. Fr. Intru Pinto, Rev. Fr. Cyprian Silva, and Rev. Fr. Sachin D’Souza.

The celebration concluded with a sumptuous lunch, leaving the participants enriched by a meaningful experience of communion, prayer, and Christmas joy.

Sauhardh Christmas Celebration Promotes Interreligious Harmony in Karwar

The Commission for Interreligious Dialogue of the Diocese of Karwar joyfully organized the Sauhardh Christmas Celebration on Saturday, 20th December 2025, at the Our Lady of Piety Church Hall, Kone, Karwar.

The celebration was presided over by Most Rev. Dr. Duming Dias, Bishop of Karwar, whose presence added spiritual depth and pastoral warmth to the occasion. The program was further honored by the presence of distinguished guests, Shri Baveshanand Swami, Monk In-charge of the Ramakrishna Ashrama, Karwar; Shri Imthiyaz Bhukari; and Brahmakumari Kavitha, reflecting the ecumenical and interreligious spirit of the gathering.

Addressing the gathering, Shri Baveshanand Swami, Monk In-charge of the Ramakrishna Ashrama, Karwar, reflected that God dwells in every human heart. He reminded the audience that while human beings are always with God, they often forget Him in the busyness of life. He called upon everyone to reconnect with God, emphasizing that goodness is present in all religions, which ultimately guide humanity towards truth and compassion.

In his message, Shri Imthiyaz Bhukari highlighted that India stands for unity in diversity and that secularism is a foundational value of the nation. He stressed the need to protect the integrity of all religions, to cultivate mutual respect, and to actively promote love and understanding among people of different faith traditions.

Brahmakumari Kavitha, who was present for the program, spoke on the importance of seeing all religions with equal respect, noting that every religion promotes peace. Using the symbol of lighting a lamp, she explained that though lights may appear many, the source is one God, reminding everyone that all human beings are brothers and sisters.

In his presidential address, Most Rev. Dr. Duming Dias, Bishop of Karwar, reflected on the mystery of the Incarnation, stating that God became man and came down to make humanity new. He illustrated his message with the simple example of a child and an airplane, drawing attention to the humility of the Christ Child. He recalled that Jesus was not first recognized by the rich or the arrogant, but by the humble shepherds, teaching that pride prevents people from becoming truly human. He emphasized the importance of organizing such interreligious programs to foster unity, humility, and harmony in society. The performances were well appreciated by the gathering and conveyed a strong message of communal harmony and goodwill.

The program was coordinated under the guidance of Rev. Fr. Edwin Paul D’Souza, IRD Secretary, with Rev. Fr. Stewart Fernandes, PRO, and the dedicated efforts of all the team members. The master of ceremony was Saver Fernandes, and a vote of thanks was given by Monthi Dsouza, whose cooperation ensured the smooth and meaningful conduct of the celebration.

The children of Nirmala Hrudaya School and the children of Kone Church, along with the youth and women, through their melodious carol singing and vibrant dance performances, conveyed the true importance and message of Christmas to the gathering.

The Sauhardh Christmas Celebration stood as a powerful reminder that Christmas is a season that invites everyone to walk together in peace, understanding, and fraternity, becoming instruments of hope and joy in society.

Ecumenical Sauharda Christmas Celebration held at Haliyal

The Ecumenical Sauharda Christmas Celebration was joyfully held at the Milagris High School Hall, Haliyal, on 17th December 2025, bringing together members of different Christian denominations in a spirit of unity, harmony, and festive joy.

The program began with a meaningful prayer song rendered by Kavitha Bhatkande, setting a reverent tone for the celebration. Rev. Fr. Edwin Paul D’Souza warmly welcomed the gathering and highlighted the importance of ecumenical fellowship, especially during the Christmas season.

The honored guests included Rev. Fr. Raymond Fernandes, Dean; Rev. Fr. Francis Miranda, Parish Priest; Rev. Fr. Edwin Paul; and pastors and leaders from various Christian denominations. Representatives of the Catholic community—Mr. Robert Kerwadkar, Mr. Anil Fernandes, Mrs. Mala Braganza, and Mr. Kamal Sequeira—were also present. All the dignitaries were respectfully honored with roses.

As part of the celebration, a Christmas cake was ceremoniously cut and distributed to all, symbolizing sharing, joy, and togetherness. The program was enriched with melodious carols by youth girls, followed by an inspiring Christmas message by Rev. Fr. Raymond Fernandes, who reflected on the true meaning of Christmas as a celebration of God’s love, peace, and unity among all people.

Further reflections were shared by Pastor Hunthmanth Methri, Pastor Maruthi of Bhatkande, and Mr. Kamal Sequeira, each emphasizing harmony, mutual respect, and social responsibility. A vibrant dance performance by girls from other Christian denominations added color and joy to the celebration.

The Women’s League of Milagris Church added a special festive touch by rendering Christmas carols, which were warmly appreciated by the gathering. The program concluded with a concluding address by Rev. Fr. Francis Miranda, who expressed gratitude to all participants and encouraged continued ecumenical collaboration in fostering peace and goodwill in society.

The celebration stood as a beautiful witness to Christian unity and the spirit of Christmas, leaving the participants inspired and strengthened in faith and fellowship.

Women’s Carol Singing Competition held at the Deanery Level

For the first time in the history of the Diocese of Karwar, the Women’s Commission organized a carol singing competition at the deanery level for the members of the Women’s League. This meaningful and faith-filled initiative was undertaken under the able guidance and leadership of Sr. Mabel Pinto, DHM, Secretary of the Women’s Commission, along with her dedicated team.

The Diocese expresses its deep gratitude to Most Rev. Dr. Duming Dias, Bishop of Karwar, for his constant encouragement, blessings, and paternal support, which inspired the Commission to take up this new venture. Heartfelt thanks are also extended to all the deans for their wholehearted cooperation and encouragement. Sincere appreciation is offered to all parish priests who motivated and supported the women of their respective parishes to participate actively.

The competition became a joyful occasion of proclamation, faith, unity, and enthusiasm. Out of 68 parishes in the Diocese, 44 parishes actively participated, reflecting the strong involvement and interest of women across the deaneries. The participants experienced great joy and fulfillment through this collective expression of faith and talent.

The success of the event was made possible by the tireless efforts of the Women’s Commission team at both diocesan and deanery levels, who worked diligently in motivating participants, preparing venues, and arranging the necessary finances.

As part of the event, the Commission also honored Mrs. Nevia Gomes, Food Production DRP, in recognition of her significant contribution in guiding women to avail government subsidies and initiate small-scale food production units. She was assured of continued support for her future initiatives in empowering women economically.

The women’s commission gratefully acknowledges the generous support and cooperation of the parish priests, religious, and institutions who provided venues and assistance for the smooth conduct of the competition. A special word of appreciation is extended to the Deanery Sisters’ Coordinators and the Deanery Leaders, whose dedication, coordination, and tireless service ensured the successful and smooth organization of the competition.

All prize winners and participants were honored with certificates and tokens of love in recognition of their efforts and enthusiasm. The women expressed their heartfelt gratitude for this opportunity and requested that such enriching and faith-building activities be continued in the future.

The women’s commission also places on record its sincere gratitude to the judges for their time, expertise, and fair evaluation, which brought satisfaction and encouragement to all participants. Special thanks are extended to the generous donors, whose selfless contributions made the event memorable and meaningful for everyone involved.

This historic initiative has opened new avenues for women’s participation, leadership, and talent expression in the Diocese and stands as a joyful celebration of Christmas, faith, and fellowship.
