Young Clergy Meeting at Dandeli Wooden Café: A Time of Renewal and Reflection

The young clergy of the diocese of Karwar gathered for a two-day meeting on March 17th and 18th at Dandeli Wooden Café. Nineteen priests participated in this enriching gathering, which fostered spiritual renewal, fraternity, and pastoral discussions.

On the evening of March 17th, the young priests gathered for a time of fellowship, fostering fraternity and strengthening their bond as priests. The gathering provided a refreshing and rejuvenating experience, engaging in meaningful conversations, sharing their joys and struggles, and supporting one another in their priestly ministry.

The evening concluded with a solemn preparation for the next day’s liturgy, ensuring a spiritually enriching celebration. The priests then came together in prayer, reciting the Holy Rosary, entrusting their ministry and intentions to the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

The day began with morning prayer, followed by an inspiring spiritual talk by Fr. Stephen D’Souza, Parish Priest of Joida Church. Drawing from his personal experiences, he encouraged the clergy to be men of deep prayer, lovers of the Word of God, positive leaders, and patient shepherds.

A key highlight of the meeting was the celebration of the Holy Eucharist, presided over by Bishop Duming Dias. In his homily, the bishop emphasized three essential aspects of priestly life: ensuring harmony between words and actions, avoiding the pursuit of power and position, and embracing humility while reaching out to the needs of the people.

Later, Bishop Duming Dias addressed the gathering, providing valuable insights on dicasteries, diocesan, and national commissions. He stressed the importance of structured pastoral efforts to enhance the mission of the church. His talk was followed by an open discussion, where priests shared their pastoral concerns and sought guidance.

Fr. Rohan Gonsalves, the secretary, presented the previous meeting reports, and Fr. Bastanv Nazareth expressed gratitude to the bishop, resort owner, Mr. Jerome Fernandes, and donor Camilo Nazareth for their support in hosting the event.

The gathering concluded with a renewed sense of commitment among the young clergy to serve with humility, prayerfulness, and zeal for the mission of Christ.

On 16, March 2025, a fruitful Pastoral Parish Council (PPC) training session was held at St. John the Baptist Church, Kumta, with the participation of 118 members from various parishes of the Kumta Deanery.

The session began with a prayer service led by Fr. Chrysostom Rodrigues, who then delivered an insightful talk on the importance of PPCs. He elaborated on the themes of Ecclesia, its mission, constitution, and the threefold ministry of Christ, followed by an in-depth discussion on the Second Vatican Council’s emphasis on PPCs.

Fr. Lancy Rodrigues addressed the gathering on the topic “Role and Responsibilities of PPC Members” as outlined in Vatican II and the Code of Canon Law. He highlighted key themes emerging from these foundational documents, offering valuable insights into the pastoral role of PPC members.

Following the talks, participants engaged in parish-wise group discussions on “The Need for PPC” and “Its Role in the Catholic Church.” The active participation and serious deliberations of the groups were highly appreciated. A brief evaluation session was conducted before concluding the event with a sumptuous meal arranged by Fr. Chrysostom Rodrigues.

The PPC training proved to be an enriching and formative experience, equipping members with a deeper understanding of their mission in the Church.

Bhatkal Deanery conducted a Parish Pastoral Council (PPC) training session on March 16, 2025, at St. Joseph’s Church, Lower Kasarkod. The event saw the participation of 151 members from various parishes of the deanery.

The training session was led by Rev. Fr. Nirmal Miranda, who served as the resource person. He emphasized the importance of the PPC in parish life and provided insights into its structure, role, and functioning. His session helped participants understand how the PPC can effectively contribute to the spiritual and pastoral growth of the parish.

Following the talk, a group discussion was facilitated by Fr. Lawrence Fernandes, the Deanery Laity Coordinator, allowing participants to engage in meaningful conversations and share their perspectives on strengthening the PPC in their respective parishes.

The program was well organized under the leadership of Fr. Albert D’Silva, the parish priest of St. Joseph’s Church, along with Fr. Lawrence Fernandes. Their meticulous arrangements ensured the smooth conduct of the training session.

The PPC training proved to be an enriching experience for all attendees, fostering a deeper commitment to parish ministry and leadership.

Jubilee Celebration of Women in Karwar Diocese: A Day of Grace, Joy, and Empowerment

9th of March 2025 marked a historic and red-letter day for the women of the Diocese of Karwar, as around 1500 women from across the diocese gathered in a spirit of faith, unity, and celebration for the Jubilee of Women. The event was held at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Assumption, Kajubag, Karwar, highlighting the significance of International Women’s Day, the Jubilee Year, and the Pilgrimage of Women.

The day began with a grand pilgrimage procession led by Sr. Mabel Pinto DHM, carrying the Jubilee Cross with deep devotion, symbolizing the journey of women towards faith and empowerment. The solemn Eucharistic celebration was presided over by the Bishop of Karwar, Rt. Rev. Dr. Duming Dias, along with the Vicar General, Rev. Fr. Richard Rodrigues, and other concelebrant priests.

During his homily, Rev. Fr. Richard inspired the women with a powerful reflection on the temptations faced in daily life and how women, with their strong faith, can overcome these challenges through the grace of God. The Mass concluded with a special blessing for all the women present, invoking God’s protection and guidance in their lives.

Following the Mass, a short stage program was organized to celebrate the day. The highlight of the program was the energetic and vibrant action songs performed by the ICYM youth, led by Shreya and team, which filled the atmosphere with joy and enthusiasm. The women actively participated and enjoyed the spirit of togetherness.

In his address, Bishop Duming Dias expressed his deep appreciation for Sr. Mabel Pinto, DHM, who worked tirelessly to organize and execute this grand event. He emphasized the theme for 2025, “For All Women and Girls: Rights. Equality. Empowerment,” calling upon women to continue their mission in the church and society, promoting peace, love, and justice.

The keynote speakers of the day, Mrs. Caroline Fernandes and Sr. Mabel D’Cruz CCR, delivered profound reflections on women’s leadership in the Bible, encouraging women to take up leadership roles in their families, church, and society, inspired by the biblical role models of faith and strength.

The success of the day was also attributed to the excellent coordination and efforts of Mrs. Felcita Gomes and Leena Siddi, who gracefully completed the program. Mrs. Mabel Rebello extended a warm welcome to all the guests and participants. Mrs. Sunita D’costa delivered the heartfelt vote of thanks, appreciating everyone who contributed to the success of the event.

A special note of gratitude was expressed to Rev. Fr. Nirmal Kumar and Fr. Gabriel Monis, who took full charge of the food arrangements for all the participants and executed them with remarkable efficiency. The Diocese also extended heartfelt thanks to Fr. Wilson Dsouza and Sr. Pinky Tandy (adorers), who offered their assistance and support, ensuring that the program was smooth and memorable.

The day truly highlighted the spirit of unity, faith, and empowerment among the women of the diocese, encouraging them to walk in faith, stand for their rights, and contribute to a more just and equitable future. The event concluded with women leaving the cathedral with renewed enthusiasm and commitment to their faith and mission. Indeed, it was a day to cherish a Jubilee of Faith, Unity, and Empowerment for the Women of Karwar Diocese.

Holy Cross Church, Donihalla, joyfully celebrated the Sacrament of Confirmation on 8th March 2025. The Most Rev. Dr. Duming Dias, Bishop of Karwar, administered the sacrament to 16 candidates, strengthening them in their faith journey and commissioning them to be true witnesses of Christ.

The bishop was given a warm welcome as he arrived at the church, accompanied by a solemn procession. The celebration of the Holy Eucharist was con-celebrated by Fr. Bastanv Nazareth, along with the parish priest, Rev. Fr. Cyril Miranda.

During his homily, Bishop Duming Dias emphasized the importance of being witnesses of Christ in everyday life. He encouraged the newly confirmed to live their faith through small acts of love, kindness, and service. The bishop also gave inspiring examples of saints who courageously lived their faith and spread the gospel through their actions.

At the end of the Mass, Fr. Cyril Miranda, the parish priest, expressed his heartfelt gratitude to the bishop for his presence and for administering the Sacrament of Confirmation. He also thanked all those who worked hard to make the day memorable, including the choir, altar servers, and parishioners. The bishop was then honored and felicitated by the parish community as a token of love and appreciation.

It was a day of grace and joy for the entire parish community, as 16 young faithful were strengthened by the gifts of the Holy Spirit to continue their journey as true disciples of Christ.

Marriage Preparation Course Empowers 51 participants for a Faith-Filled Union

The three-day residential marriage preparation course took place from 7th to 9th March 2025 at Puneeth Sadan, Shirwad, Karwar, bringing together 51 participants. The program was designed to equip the participants with the knowledge and spiritual foundation necessary to build a strong and faith-filled family.

The course covered essential aspects of married life, including effective communication, conflict and reconciliation, relationships with parents and in-laws, marriage and Cannon Law, complementarity of man and woman, and the spiritual dimensions of marriage. Experienced persons led the sessions, offering valuable insights and practical guidance. Through interactive discussions and group activities like skit presentations on the topics covered in the sessions, participants engaged deeply with the topics, fostering open and meaningful conversations. The supportive environment encouraged the participants to share their thoughts and experiences, making the learning process both enriching and impactful.

Beyond the sessions, the program emphasized spiritual renewal. Participants actively took part in the Eucharist, adoration, Way of the Cross, and the Sacrament of Reconciliation, allowing them to deepen their relationship with God. These moments of prayer and reflection helped the participants strengthen their faith and recognize the sacredness of the marital bond they were preparing to enter.

The course concluded with a certificate distribution ceremony, marking the participants’ commitment to a well-prepared and faith-driven marriage. Many expressed their gratitude, sharing how the course provided them with clarity, confidence, and a renewed sense of purpose.

With such positive feedback, the organizers reaffirmed their commitment to continuing these programs in the future, recognizing their vital role in preparing the participants for a lifelong journey of love, understanding, and faith.

PPC Training Seminar held at Sirsi Deanery

On 2nd March 2025, the training seminar for the Parish Pastoral Council (PPC) members of Sirsi Deanery was successfully conducted at Infant Jesus Church, Agasebagil, Sirsi. A total of 92 participants attended this enriching session aimed at strengthening the leadership and pastoral mission of the laity in the Church.

The seminar began with a prayer and an introductory address by Rev. Fr. Anacletas D’Mello, Dean of Sirsi Deanery. The key sessions were led by Rev. Fr. Lancy Rodrigues, Director of the Laity Commission, who spoke on the importance of parish pastoral councils and the roles and responsibilities of PPC members. Also provided a historical perspective on councils, beginning with the time of Moses in the Old Testament, highlighting the Sanhedrin and early councils in the New Testament, including the mission of the 72 disciples, the 12 apostles, and the institution of deacons. He then focused on Vatican II documents and Canon Law, emphasizing the vital role of the laity in Church leadership and the importance of coordination between PPC members, parish priests, and parish associations for the effective functioning of the Church.

Following the sessions, participants engaged in parish-wise group discussions on the relevance of PPC in the life of the Catholic Church. Rev. Fr. Anacletas D’Mello and Rev. Fr. Romeo Fernandes moderated the reporting session, where key insights and reflections were shared.

The seminar concluded with an evaluation, a vote of thanks, and a fellowship lunch. The highlight of the event was the growing recognition of the laity’s role in church leadership, underscoring the theme: Laity Coming of Age

On 2nd March 2025, a training program for the newly elected Parish Pastoral Council (PPC) members was successfully conducted at Pratibhodaya Hall, Honavar. The event saw the participation of 164 members from various parishes, aiming to strengthen their understanding of PPC’s role in pastoral life.

The keynote speaker, Rev. Fr. Nirmal Kumar Miranda, Director of the Diocesan Pastoral Centre (DPC), delivered two insightful talks. The first session focused on the right understanding of PPC and its importance in the parish, emphasizing the council’s role in fostering pastoral growth and collaboration. The second session highlighted pastoral planning in parishes, including the responsibilities of PPC members in effective decision-making and parish development.

Adding to the interactive nature of the program, group discussions were led by Rev. Fr. Sebastián Fernandes, Deanery Coordinator, providing participants with an opportunity to engage deeply with the topics and share perspectives.

Holy Eucharist celebrated by Rev. Fr. Thomas Fernandes, Dean of Honavar Deanery. Mr. Lorens Leema served as the Master of the Ceremony, ensuring the smooth flow of the program.The well-organized event was made possible by the dedicated efforts of St. Sebastian Church, Mugwa, which took charge of all the arrangements.

This training marks an important step in equipping PPC members with the knowledge and skills needed to serve their respective parishes effectively, fostering a spirit of unity and mission in the diocese.

CRI General Body Meeting of Karwar Unit held at Honavar

The Annual General Body Meeting of the Conference of Religious India (CRI) – Karwar Unit was held on 26th February 2025 at St. Ignatius Nursing College, Honavar, bringing together 80 religious men and women dedicated to their mission. Themed “Evangelical Counsels of Chastity, Poverty, and Obedience in Today’s Context,” the gathering provided a platform for deep reflection and renewal of commitment to religious life.

The meeting commenced with a prayer service led by Sr. Zione, followed by a warm welcome from Sr. Alphonsa Stanley, President of the Karwar Unit. A lit diya was ceremoniously presented to the dignitaries, symbolizing God’s presence, along with flowers as a token of appreciation.

The first session was conducted by Rev. Fr. Francis Agnelo Rozario (OFM), who delivered an insightful talk on the Evangelical Counsels. His reflections inspired participants to embrace their vows with renewed zeal.

Following a short break, Sr. Severine Menezes, President of the CRI Mangalore Unit, led a session on health and well-being. Through her interactive and energetic approach, she emphasized the significance of maintaining good health in religious life, even introducing simple exercises to refresh and rejuvenate the attendees.

The next session, led by Sr. Jacintha Saldanha (KRCR), Provincial Superior of SAP, focused on emotional well-being. She highlighted the importance of inner stability, self-awareness, and maintaining emotional balance while living out the religious vocation.

The gathering culminated with a Eucharistic Celebration, officiated by Rev. Fr. Nirmal Miranda, Episcopal Vicar for Religious and Director of the Pastoral Centre, Shirwad, Karwar, along with nine concelebrants. In his homily, Fr. Nirmal encouraged all religious to work together as “pilgrims of hope,” bringing faith and service to the people of God.

Sr. Florine Fernandes, CRI Secretary, concluded the meeting with a heartfelt vote of thanks, acknowledging the contributions of all involved. A special mention was given to Rt. Rev. Dr. Duming Dias, Bishop of Karwar, whose blessings and support were instrumental despite his inability to attend.

The day ended with a fraternal meal, fostering a sense of unity and renewal among the religious members. Participants departed feeling spiritually enriched, rejuvenated, and committed to their mission. The CRI General Body Meeting proved to be a meaningful and inspiring gathering, reinforcing the values of religious life and strengthening the bond among members.

The Diocesan Women’s Commission, under the leadership of its Secretary, Sr. Mabel Pinto DHM, successfully organized a leadership training program for the parish women cell office bearers of Bhatkal, Kumta, and Honavar Deaneries. At Prathibodaya Hall, Honavar. The event saw 100% participation from all three deaneries, a testament to the dedication and commitment of our women leaders.

A total of 120 women leaders took part in the training, actively engaging in the sessions and benefiting immensely from the insights shared. Sr. Mabel D’Cruz, CCR, delivered an inspiring talk, encouraging the participants to follow the example of Mother Mary and be role models in their families, parishes, and society.

The presence and appreciation of Rev. Fr. Thomas Fernandes, Dean, Honavar Deanery; Rev. Fr. Nirmal Miranda, DPC Director; and Rev. Fr. Anthony Rodrigues, Dean, Kumta Deanery added great value to the occasion. They commended the women for their contribution in and through the Women’s League.

The commission also thanked  Rev. Fr. Lawrence Fernandes, the Diocesan Spiritual Director for the Women’s Commission, moderated the plenary session and provided valuable guidance for the future. Additionally, Rev. Fr. Stewart Fernandes enlightened the women on how to navigate the Diocesan website, enabling them to stay informed and engaged.

Mrs. Annie Rodrigues, Diocesan Women Cell Treasurer, who warmly welcomed the gathering. Mrs. Celine Dias, who expressed heartfelt gratitude on behalf of all. Mrs. Perpeth Lopes, who efficiently completed the program. Mrs. Sangeeta Gonsalves and the deanery  leaders, whose collaboration ensured the smooth execution of the event.

The commission thanked parish priests of the three deaneries for their unwavering support and cooperation. May this training bear fruit in the life and mission of our Women’s Cell members, empowering them to serve with faith, leadership, and dedication.
